340 Reservoir Twinning

Client: Town of Osoyoos

Date: September 2012

Value: $960,000

The Town of Osoyoos utilizes several reservoirs for balancing and emergency water storage. These reservoirs supply various pressure zones within the water supply network. A review of the system showed that the existing 340 reservoir was undersized and required an upgrade. Constructed in 1964, the reservoir was considered to be in good condition.

The decision was made to construct additional storage by means of a twinning reservoir, located at the same location and elevation as the existing concrete tank. The proposed reservoir was sized to account for the existing deficiencies in storage capacity as well as the projected requirements. Pipe and valve works to supply and drain the new reservoir were sized to allow for simultaneous operation of the two reservoirs, resulting in water levels between the tanks being equivalent.

Construction of the twinning reservoir required substantial earthworks, including removal of bedrock by means of blasting.

The reservoir twinning project included:

  • 2,550m³ cast-in-place reservoir
  • Cast-in-place valve chamber, with precast block retaining wall
  • 350ø and 400ø pipes and valve work to supply and drain the proposed reservoir
  • Construction of an overflow detention pond
  • Upgrade of controls to incorporate the new reservoir into the distribution system

TRUE Consulting provided detailed design, construction management, agency approval applications, and was the coordinating professional responsible for the electrical and structural subconsultants.
