Alexis Creek Water System Upgrades

Client: Cariboo Regional District

Date: July 2009

Value: $1,200,000

In 2006 the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) applied for a grant under the Canada-BC Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund program in order to develop a water system for the central Alexis Creek area. The grant application was made on the basis of developing a safe and healthy water system for the small rural community in order to address ongoing water quality concerns with respect to some of the existing stand-alone water systems (six in total varying in age and condition).

It was imperative to the Cariboo Regional District and the community of Alexis Creek that the improved water system design maintained reliable potable water and fire protection capabilities to the entire community.

The main challenge associated with this project was replacing six independent water systems with a new system capable of providing sufficient water storage for both domestic consumption and fire suppression storage while maintaining adequate residual pressures to services to the entire community.

To accomplish this, a bolted steel reservoir was proposed and later installed at an appropriate elevation for provision of service by gravity to the community while providing adequate fire flow protection. In general, the distribution system comprised the following:

  • 2.5 km of 150mm (6") diameter PVC watermain
  • 1.0 km of 200mm (8") diameter PVC watermain
  • 50 service connections (includes residential and commercial buildings)
  • 3 pressure reducing valve stations

Due to topographical constraints three pressure reducing valve stations were installed in strategic locations to reduce domestic pressures to an acceptable range. Adequate pipe sizing were determined to ensure adequate fire flow potential was available throughout the community.

This project was very beneficial to the community occupying Central Alexis Creek. The existing six independent water systems were unreliable and unsafe in terms of water quality and have since been replaced by one supply system capable of providing safe reliable drinking water. In addition, the community now has adequate fire suppression capabilities in the event of a fire.
