Five Mile Creek Dam Reconstruction

Client: Williams Lake Indian Band

Date: Winter 2005

Value: $800,000

In response to the transfer of water licenses associated with Five Mile Creek from the Federal Government to the Williams Lake Indian Band in 2005, INAC initiated and funded the rehabilitation of Five Mile Creek Dam.  Five Mile Dam was a fully functioning dam prior to rehabilitation which was utilized by the Band and a ranch, a second license holder, for irrigation purposes.  The most significant deficiencies associated with the existing structure included its inability to provide storage of the combined license allocations of 505 acre-ft, there was no developed high flow spillway system and the low-level control systems were very unreliable.

The most challenging design phase component to this structure involved the provision of a low level control system which could be operated by both license holders.  A three-way control system was developed which would allow water to be supplied to the ranchâs existing irrigation infrastructure at two locations.

The third control system would be operated by the First Nation for use on its reserve downstream.  The improved control system allowed both license holders independent control of water from the dam to its lands for use as an irrigation supply.

The Five Mile Creek Dam Rehabilitation project comprised the following works:

  • 300m long dam with 12,500 cu.m. expansion to the existing structure
  • 180m long rip rap lined high flow spillway system with a low profile, multi-plate CSP box culvert road crossing
  • 30m long low-level sluice pipe system
  • sluice control system replacement
  • three-way irrigation control system development
